Chapter Twelve

“Gunter’s is one of the best things about London,” Caroline told Sarah as they settled themselves at a table for ices on Saturday afternoon, “especially on a warm day. Who would have thought it would be this hot in September?”

“New Orleans is this warm nearly yearlong,” Sarah answered as she placed her bonnet on an adjacent empty chair. “And we have horrible humidity also.”

“Well, London is damp and often foggy, but it is almost always cool.”

Sarah smiled. “In Louisiana, even the fog is warm.”

“That is hard to imagine.” As they waited for their ices, Caroline changed the subject. “I think you did quite well at Lady Dansforth’s tea yesterday.”

Sarah nodded. She’d probably handled the tea a whole lot better than she’d handled dinner last night, but she wasn’t about to share her stupid actions with Caroline. At least she’d had some rather pleasant dreams, but she wasn’t going to share those, either. “I suspect that is because her guests were not gossips.”

“Ninety-nine percent of the ton gossips,” Caroline replied. “Society would be quite dull if they did not, but the matrons from Almack’s were more interested in sizing up Ann for the Season than they were in your rather quick marriage. Please take no offense.”

“I do not. Actually, I would love if no one ever mentioned it again.”

Caroline shook her head. “Sorry to disappoint, but that will not happen. Tongues will start wagging as soon as you and Brice are seen out together.”

Which was something Sarah didn’t want to think about. Brice had made no mention of attending any events together. He had been quite clear that would happen only if he couldn’t avoid it, and he seemed quite happy continuing his solitary pursuits, including going out last night. Although, if she were honest with herself, he might have stayed in if she hadn’t been such an idiot. “That may not happen for awhile.”

“It will happen sooner than you think,” Caroline said as the waiter brought their ices. “Amelia’s guests may not be big gossips, but once Lady Jersey or Lady Cowper mention you were present at the Duchess of Dansworth’s tea, Society ladies will nearly knock each other over to get you to attend whatever they are hosting.”

“Merciful heavens! I hope they do not!” Sarah exclaimed. “I really do not like being the center of attention.”

“A most unusual trait,” a male voice behind them said.

Sarah started and then turned to see Dennis Ramsey. “Mr. Ramsey! What are you doing here?”

He lifted the ice he held in his hand. “I heard this was the place to stay cool. Do you mind if I join you?”

“Of course not.” Sarah picked up her bonnet and hung it over her chair by its ribbons. “Let me introduce you to my friend, Lady Kendrick.”

“Lady Kendrick.” He bowed slightly before he took his chair. “I’m a business associate of Sarah’s husband.” When Caroline’s eyebrow lifted slightly, he added, “I suppose I should say Lady Barclay, but in America we don’t stand on a lot of formality.
