Chapter Twelve
âGunterâs is one of the best things about London,â Caroline told Sarah as they settled themselves at a table for ices on Saturday afternoon, âespecially on a warm day. Who would have thought it would be this hot in September?â
âNew Orleans is this warm nearly yearlong,â Sarah answered as she placed her bonnet on an adjacent empty chair. âAnd we have horrible humidity also.â
âWell, London is damp and often foggy, but it is almost always cool.â
Sarah smiled. âIn Louisiana, even the fog is warm.â
âThat is hard to imagine.â As they waited for their ices, Caroline changed the subject. âI think you did quite well at Lady Dansforthâs tea yesterday.â
Sarah nodded. Sheâd probably handled the tea a whole lot better than sheâd handled dinner last night, but she wasnât about to share her stupid actions with Caroline. At least sheâd had some rather pleasant dreams, but she wasnât going to share those, either. âI suspect that is because her guests were not gossips.â
âNinety-nine percent of the ton gossips,â Caroline replied. âSociety would be quite dull if they did not, but the matrons from Almackâs were more interested in sizing up Ann for the Season than they were in your rather quick marriage. Please take no offense.â
âI do not. Actually, I would love if no one ever mentioned it again.â
Caroline shook her head. âSorry to disappoint, but that will not happen. Tongues will start wagging as soon as you and Brice are seen out together.â
Which was something Sarah didnât want to think about. Brice had made no mention of attending any events together. He had been quite clear that would happen only if he couldnât avoid it, and he seemed quite happy continuing his solitary pursuits, including going out last night. Although, if she were honest with herself, he might have stayed in if she hadnât been such an idiot. âThat may not happen for awhile.â
âIt will happen sooner than you think,â Caroline said as the waiter brought their ices. âAmeliaâs guests may not be big gossips, but once Lady Jersey or Lady Cowper mention you were present at the Duchess of Dansworthâs tea, Society ladies will nearly knock each other over to get you to attend whatever they are hosting.â
âMerciful heavens! I hope they do not!â Sarah exclaimed. âI really do not like being the center of attention.â
âA most unusual trait,â a male voice behind them said.
Sarah started and then turned to see Dennis Ramsey. âMr. Ramsey! What are you doing here?â
He lifted the ice he held in his hand. âI heard this was the place to stay cool. Do you mind if I join you?â
âOf course not.â Sarah picked up her bonnet and hung it over her chair by its ribbons. âLet me introduce you to my friend, Lady Kendrick.â
âLady Kendrick.â He bowed slightly before he took his chair. âIâm a business associate of Sarahâs husband.â When Carolineâs eyebrow lifted slightly, he added, âI suppose I should say Lady Barclay, but in America we donât stand on a lot of formality.
